While the scouting the internet for new work out clothes I recently came across Montiel, an LA-based activewear brand seen on health conscious celebs such as Alessandra Ambrosia, Lea Michele and Izabel Goulart. I really liked the simple but stylish design (the Teardrop bra especially caught my eye!) so I got in touch with founder Maggie Montiel who was kind enough to tell me a bit about her story and the idea behind brand. Since then I have of course also managed to try out some of Montiel’s pieces and I absolutely love them. In London we unfortunately don’t have a lot of activewear brands in general (yet!) and especially not affordable ones so Montiel is definitely a welcome edition to my work out wardrobe.
What was the inspiration behind starting Montiel?
I was inspired to create a more fashionable and versatile wardrobe for the girl on the go whether she is headed to the gym or meeting her friends for a drink. I found that different lines and layers could achieve that. I am a strong believer in less is more and feel that I demonstrate that simplicity in my collection. More importantly I wanted to offer a better price point, with consistent quality, and a different boutique like feel.
Do you have a favourite piece in the current collection?
My uniform is black lea leggings, teardrop bra, and the cowl back tank. I swap out the hanley long sleeve on colder days. I love wearing all black. I’ll change my flip flops for boots when I want to look more chic.
Do you see any specific work out trends in LA right now?
Group exercising is definitely a must in LA. You are so much stronger when you have the energy of others around you. There are new gyms popping up on every corner all the time. I used to be a long distance runner until I saw the change in my body that crossfit, pilates and yoga had done. I haven’t gone back to long runs since. We are also so lucky to have places like Runyon and Griffith park close by to hike. I try to get one or two hikes in a week.
What’s your favourite spot for healthy eating in LA?
I eat at Whole Foods at least once a day for their amazing salad and juice bar. I also love Fresh Corn Grill for quick and healthy dinners and YATAI tapas bar on Sunset Blvd, it’s a hidden gem for sushi.
