One of the most fun of all hybrid yoga forms out there must definitely be voga, the brainchild of former designer and yoga instructor Juliet Murrell. Vogue UK, US, Brazil and France seems to agree. Being a friend of a friend, I had been meaning to take one of Juliet’s classes for a while and luckily I finally made it thanks to being invited by Love Beets UK to their launch event where Juliet held a yoga class at the Edition Hotel here in London. Voga is a combination of yoga and voguing, the dance style that came out of Harlems gay scene in the 80’s. For most of us though, Madonna probably is what comes to mind but if you haven’t yet done it I really recommend the documentary Paris is Burning that showcases the birth of voguing. Juliet’s yoga class was exactly what I had expected: a super-fun high tempo class with vogue-inspired yoga moves and an amazing soundtrack. If you want to take a class check out the schedule here.
Since first writing this post I have been lucky to team up with Juliet on several occasions to DJ for her events and Colette in Paris being one of the coolest ones so far!
3 quick questions with Juliet:
There were a few factors, rewatching Paris is Burning after returning from my teachers training in India, going to Madame Jojos to watch a battle with legendary Anna Ninja and setting up my first retreat in Ibiza where yoga music and dance all perfectly coexist. Also having the enthusiasm of my journalist friend when I mentioned the concept of Voga helped me to realise that this was worth pursuing!
What are the most fun collaborations or events you have done?
Colette in Paris is awesome as we do it in a gorgeous dance studio called Elephant Paname. I also loved going to South America to introduce voga to Rio, Buenos Aires and Uruguay. In the UK I have done a bunch of Festivals such as Lovebox, Secret Garden and Bestival and it’s amazing seeing so many people in crazy outfits sweating it out to Janet Jackson in the sun.
Tell me about your next Ibiza retreat!
We do retreats every May and October and this year our May one is the 17th to the 23rd, you can read more about it here. I partner up with Jocelyn who I introduced to yoga several years ago when we first met in Ibiza. She’s also a gourmet health-food chef and we create boutique retreats which are friendly and inclusive, opening guests up to the joys of yoga and being part of this community. We generally have a mix of boys and girls and every year just gets better and better!
